Standing Seam Trim – Protecting Your Metal Infrastructure

Ideally, we all want our buildings to look the part of what our business is trying to represent. From gardening to the structure itself, it has to look the part for your business. Your roofing needs shouldn’t be left out of that check list. In this article, we explain further why your metal structure can benefit from metal roofing panels, standing seam trim, and how we can help!

Metal Roofing Trim and How it Works

For over the last few hundred years, metal roofing has been the preferred roofing material for agricultural and industrial buildings. Why is that, you might ask? Durability. When properly installed, standing seam trim or “flashing details”, act as a sealant for your metal roofing structure, preventing water & wind damage on your infrastructure. These “flashing details” are installed at the intersection and terminations of your metal roofing system. Unlike other roofing materials, standing seam roofs use 26 or 24 gauge metal, which doesn’t crack or corrode over time.

The 3 Most Common Standing Seam Metal Roofing Systems

The first flashing detail we should talk about is the ridge gap standing seam trim. This flashing detail provides a seal at the top of the roof line, where the metal panels meet. It diverts water, therefore preventing moisture accumulation from happening. The ridge gap is also used to strengthen & seal the standing seam panels; and because of their placement, this helps keep water and pests out. Ridge gaps are end lapped 4-6 inches with the end laps installed away from the predominant wind.

At the end of the roofing system, there is eave trim. This is installed at the lowest point of the roof and is used to direct the rain away from the roof fascia. Eave trim serves as the termination of the roof panel as a whole.

Finally, we have the rake trim, or more commonly known as gable trim. This trim is installed along the roofline at the sloped sides of the roof panel & along the wall of the structure. Ideally, ridge gap, eave trim and gable trim. Flashing detail should be installed around any structural features in your roof’s surface, such as a vent or skylight.

Something Modern, and Aesthetically Pleasing

Metal roofing is the prefered material for agricultural and industrial buildings, and a properly installed standing trim roof has an average lifespan of fifty or more years. Out of the many types of roofing systems, the standing seam is one of the most durable and weathertight available in the industry. Not only is it durable and weatherproof, the standing seam panels offer sleek lines that create a more modern look for your home or business. If your design requires a metal roofing system that is both aesthetically pleasing and structurally sound, choose one of our four standing seam metal roofing systems
